Chinese President Xi Jinping says he will strengthen and modernise China’s military and intensify efforts to stamp out corruption within the ruling Communist Party. Speaking on Wednesday at the Great Hall of the People to political and military leaders and Chinese Communist Party members marking the party’s 105th founding anniversary, Xi highlights the need for a “strong military” and reiterates that the armed forces must operate under the Communist Party’s “absolute leadership.”

Several reports link Xi’s remarks to the impact of an ongoing anti-graft campaign that has reportedly reduced the military’s top ranks and reshaped senior leadership. Xi also pledges a “critical, protracted, and comprehensive” anti-corruption campaign within the party, including measures aimed at tighter education, management and supervision of senior military officials.

Xi also repeats a long-standing position on Taiwan, saying the party’s mission is to resolve the Taiwan question and achieve “complete unification.” He calls on China to oppose interference by external forces, without naming any country. The statements are presented as part of Xi’s broader policy agenda for party control, military modernisation and internal discipline.
