Nigerian sprinter Godson Brume, also reported as Godson Oghenebrume, is sentenced to 27 months in a US federal prison for illegal firearm possession while in the United States on a non-immigrant F-1 student visa. The US Department of Justice says the case involves a firearm found after the athlete pleaded guilty in federal court in December 2025. The DOJ statement says the guilty plea followed an earlier incident in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on February 7, 2025, in which Brume admitted owning and discharging a Glock 43X, 9mm pistol during an altercation with an ex-girlfriend at his apartment.

After completing his prison term, Brume faces deportation from the United States, according to the DOJ. Nigerian outlets also report that the sentence is linked to the fact that, under US law, people admitted temporarily on non-immigrant visas are generally not allowed to possess firearms except in limited circumstances.

All reports identify Brume as a 23-year-old sprinter who studied and trained in the US on an athletics scholarship at Louisiana State University and who has represented Nigeria in relay events internationally.
