The Federal High Court in Abuja grants bail to social media commentator Garus Gololo while he faces an ongoing trial over alleged cybercrime and defamation involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio. According to reports from multiple outlets, Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia admits Gololo to bail in the sum of N5 million with one surety in the same amount. One report specifies that the surety must be a Grade Level 12 officer in the federal civil service.
The court adjourns the case for further proceedings, with the matter set to return on September 22, 2026. Gololo is charged by the Nigeria Police Force on a seven-count charge that prosecutors say relates to cybercrime, cyberstalking, defamation, and incitement. He had previously pleaded not guilty and is remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre.
Prosecutors allege Gololo published a viral video and Facebook posts claiming Akpabio made statements requiring northerners to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 or face expulsion, and that “with or without the North, Tinubu would win.” The Senate President’s office denies the allegations, describing them as false and intended to mislead the public.
