Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde says the rescued schoolchildren and teachers taken from Oriire Local Government Area are not yet reunited with their families. Speaking after visiting the 2 Division Medical Centre at Odogbo Barracks in Ibadan, Makinde said the victims remain in military custody to receive essential medical care and routine profiling. He also stated that rehabilitation is a priority for the children and teachers after their captivity, which lasted about 50 to 56 days, according to the different reports.
Several outlets report that the victims arrive at Makinde’s office in Ibadan, where they are received by state officials and security chiefs, shortly after being released by security forces. Premium Times adds that the reunions with families happen after the victims are discharged from hospital, and that the victims are formally handed over to the Oyo State Government by the Nigerian military the day before the family meetings.
The Presidency and related reports say the victims undergo medical examinations and are in the care of the armed forces before being handed over to the state. Reporting also cites the federal government’s account of a coordinated security operation that secures the release and results in arrests of suspected kidnappers, with some reports noting that some suspects are neutralised.
