Europe’s regulators and security services drove much of the day’s world news. In Brussels, the EU hit Temu with a €200 million fine under the Digital Services Act, accusing the Chinese-owned retailer of failing to stop illegal and unsafe products — from dangerous toys to faulty chargers — reaching consumers, in one of the bloc’s toughest moves yet against a major online platform. Security concerns were also front and centre elsewhere: in Australia, a Melbourne woman who had returned from Syria was charged with terrorism offences over alleged links to ISIS, while in Switzerland authorities called a stabbing at Winterthur’s main train station, which injured three men, an act of terror and swiftly arrested the suspect. Against that tense backdrop, Ukraine secured a significant military boost, with Sweden promising 16 older Gripen fighter jets and Kyiv announcing plans to buy 20 more.
