Politics today spans local intimidation, global brinkmanship and early election positioning. In the occupied West Bank, Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna says armed Israeli settlers surrounded and detained his delegation for more than an hour before Israeli forces intervened, an episode that throws fresh light on the insecurity facing Palestinian communities and raises awkward questions for Washington. Far more ominously, Donald Trump is escalating his war of words with Iran, boasting that “1,000 missiles” are aimed at the country if it attempts to assassinate him, even as an already fragile interim understanding appears to be collapsing amid mutual threats with Iran’s leadership. Elsewhere, Nigeria’s Labour Party moved to shape the longer political horizon by naming veteran nurse and public health specialist Hajja Bintu Konto as its vice-presidential candidate for 2027, casting the ticket as a message of competence and inclusiveness.
