A 17-year-old in Canberra is charged with planning or preparing a terrorist act in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), with prosecutors also alleging he transmitted violent extremist material. The teenager previously faced charges after police found alleged violent extremist material during a search warrant on 5 November last year. Since that arrest, he has been remanded in custody.
The new charges are listed as one count of planning or preparing for a terrorist act and one count of transmitting violent extremist material, according to ABC. The Guardian reports the case is the first instance of a person being charged with planning a terrorist act in the ACT.
The West Australian adds that the teenager is also described as being allegedly motivated by “nationalist, racist extremism,” and that he faces additional charges connected to the alleged plan. Across the reports, the matter proceeds through the ACT Children’s Court, where the charges are put to the defendant. The reports do not indicate the alleged target or operational details of the plan.
