A house fire in Belcamp, Maryland, is ruled accidental after investigators determined a dog unintentionally turned on a kitchen toaster while the homeowners were away. Multiple outlets report that the family’s dog, identified in one account as “Bo,” jumped up on the kitchen counter and activated the toaster. Once switched on, the appliance produced heat sufficient to ignite nearby combustible items, allowing flames to spread through parts of the home.

Officials reviewed security camera footage from the residence, which they said captured the dog’s actions and supported the conclusion that there was no evidence of foul play or intentional negligence. Fire crews responded quickly, with reporting indicating roughly 30 firefighters were dispatched and the fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes.

The fire caused substantial damage and resulted in the deaths of three family pets. Neighbors helped rescue two dogs, including Bo and another dog named Addie, but two cats and a third dog named Dakota were not saved. Damage estimates reported across outlets total about $200,000, with one account breaking that figure into structural damage and damage to personal belongings.
