Pakistani police say the June 27 attack on a Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) camp in Karachi was planned and supported from Afghanistan, and that they have arrested the operation’s alleged mastermind. Speaking at a press conference with Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, City Senior Superintendent of Police Irfan Bahadur said the attackers carried out the raid in the Gulistan-i-Jauhar area, killing three Rangers personnel and injuring four, according to ISPR. Police said the attackers belonged to the “Indian proxy” Jamaatul Ahrar (JuA), and that three attackers were killed during retaliatory action while one was arrested, identified as an Afghan national.

Police said the alleged plot follows multiple stages, including training of terrorists in Afghanistan, their transfer to Karachi, guidance from Afghan handlers, and provision of weapons and suicide vests. They named the suspected suicide bomber as Janaan from Afghanistan’s Farah province, and other attackers as Bilal alias Hadi (Bajaur; later Kandahar) and Umer Farooq (Kunar), while the arrested attacker was identified as Usman Sher Mohammad from Nangarhar.

Police identified the mastermind as Qari Basheer alias Qari Habib, arrested during an operation after the attack. Authorities also described a wider facilitation network in Karachi and said some key figures provided instructions from Afghanistan.
