WhatsApp is developing and testing a first-party cloud backup option for iPhone users that would allow chat backups to be stored on WhatsApp’s servers instead of Apple’s iCloud. Multiple reports citing WABetaInfo say the feature has been spotted in recent WhatsApp for iOS beta/TestFlight builds (including version 26.28.10.16), with code indicating users will be able to select their preferred backup destination from within WhatsApp’s chat backup settings. iCloud is expected to remain the default, while the WhatsApp option would provide an alternative.

The reports also describe a storage offer that may include 2GB of free space on WhatsApp’s servers and paid tiers that could include around 50GB priced at roughly $0.99 per month, with higher-capacity plans (such as 1TB) discussed as possibilities. Backups stored on WhatsApp’s cloud are described as protected by end-to-end encryption by default, with no option to disable encryption. Apple iCloud backup encryption requires users to enable features such as Advanced Data Protection, while WhatsApp’s approach would be on by default. WhatsApp has not announced timing for a public launch, and the feature appears not fully functional for beta testers yet.
