Mumbai’s civic body BMC announces a 10% reduction in water supply across the city from May 15 as a precautionary measure, according to reports from The Hindu and Mint. The decision follows a drop in reservoir levels used for the city’s water needs, which are described as being at around 23% of Mumbai’s annual requirement. The reduction is also expected to be felt in nearby areas under BMC supply, including Thane and Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Mint reports.
BMC also states that Mumbai will receive additional water reserves to help manage supply during the period. The Hindu reports that the city will get an extra 1,47,092 million litres from the Bhatsa Dam and 90,000 million litres from storage at the Upper Vaitarna Dam. The announcements frame the measure as temporary and linked to current reservoir conditions, while additional supplies are scheduled through the dam reservoirs to support overall distribution. Both sources attribute the change in water supply to declining reservoir levels and present the steps as part of BMC’s contingency planning.
