Lagos State Government says it will pursue legal action against an X (formerly Twitter) user who shared a video falsely presented as showing flooding in Lagos. Environment and Water Resources Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab makes the announcement, stating that the content has been debunked and that removing the post after it is corrected does not eliminate the person’s responsibility. Wahab says the flood video was actually recorded outside Nigeria, identifying its origin as Bangladesh. He also calls on social media users to verify the authenticity and source of information before sharing, saying misinformation can mislead the public and weaken discussions about genuine issues affecting Lagos.
The commissioner identifies the account as “Enugu Loudspeaker (#Jamessucre2).” After Lagos State’s clarification, the user acknowledges the video did not originate in Nigeria, reports that the post is taken down, and indicates it has been confirmed to have happened outside the country. Despite the deletion and retraction, Lagos State says the case will proceed through legal channels, framing the action as enforcement of responsibilities attached to freedom of expression.
