Taxi boss Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni is arrested in connection with an alleged extortion case involving a businessman in Kwaggafontein, Mpumalanga. Police say Sibanyoni, along with two other people, is detained over claims that repeated demands for money were made, and that investigations are ongoing. One additional suspect is reported as still at large at the time of some reports, while police later say they make contact with a fourth wanted person and that the individual subsequently hands himself over to police.
The matter is linked to alleged extortion and money laundering charges estimated at around R2 million to R2.2 million. Separate reporting notes that the case had previously been struck from the court roll amid controversy involving a prosecutor’s absence, and that the National Prosecuting Authority later re-enrolls the matter. Sibanyoni and co-accused are reported to have been granted bail after the case was revived. There are also reports that Sibanyoni files an urgent application in the High Court in Mbombela to block arrest warrants. The investigation continues across Gauteng and Mpumalanga.
