Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah is briefed on findings from two inquiries into an HIV outbreak at the SESSI-run Valika Hospital in Karachi, and orders wider reviews of infection control across Sindh. In separate updates, Labour Minister Saeed Ghani says the first inquiry reported administration, procedural and infection-prevention failures, including non-compliance with personal protective equipment requirements and mishandling of single-use syringes. Ghani also says earlier investigations identified 16 HIV-positive children linked to the paediatrics department, while a later inquiry report dated June 19, 2026 confirms 78 HIV-positive children and notes additional outcomes including reported deaths.

Following the outbreak, the Sindh government launches HIV screening in surrounding areas and at another SESSI-run facility in Landhi, reporting 120 positive cases among more than 10,500 residents screened near Valika Hospital and 10 positive cases among 2,000 tested near the Landhi hospital. The government says affected patients are treated at multiple hospitals using government support, and it establishes an anti-retroviral therapy (ART) centre at Valika Hospital.

Officials say disciplinary action is pursued against healthcare staff, and authorities order province-wide review of sterilisation, biomedical waste management and patient-safety protocols.
