The Supreme Court of India directs comedian and content creator Samay Raina to pay a monetary cost after finding that he violated court orders and made alleged false statements in proceedings related to the “India’s Got Latent” controversy. Multiple reports say the court concluded that Raina “took the court for a ride,” failed to comply with directions, and submitted an affidavit that the court said had no material on record. The court asks the amount to be deposited within two weeks.
The case is linked to complaints filed by the Cure SMA India Foundation, which had alleged that Raina made insensitive remarks on his show about people with disabilities, including comments related to spinal muscular atrophy treatment costs. Several outlets also report that the Supreme Court imposed costs not only on Raina, but also on four other comedians connected to the matter for not complying with a reparation or compliance order.
While most outlets report a ₹3 lakh cost against Raina, at least one outlet reports a ₹10 lakh fine, indicating differing figures in coverage; however, the central finding across reports is that the court found non-compliance and alleged inaccurate statements during proceedings.
