OpenAI is developing its first AI hardware product, a portable, screenless smart speaker intended to act as a “humanlike AI companion” in the home, Bloomberg reports. The device is designed to rely on ChatGPT capabilities and a more advanced voice system dubbed “GPT-Live” to answer questions, respond to messages, play media, and help control smart home accessories. It is also described as learning over time to become more personalized and proactive, drawing on user information such as emails.

The speaker reportedly includes mechanical moving parts to create a sense of life or interaction, and it has a camera and other sensors to understand a user’s surroundings and context. It uses a rechargeable battery, allowing it to be carried from room to room.

The project is linked to a legal dispute with Apple. Apple is suing OpenAI for alleged theft of trade secrets tied to the development of the device, including claims about confidential information such as a proprietary metal finishing technique. OpenAI argues the device differs substantially from Apple products and that it is unlikely to violate Apple’s trade secrets. Sources also say timing could shift; rumors suggested a 2026 release, but a launch is now expected in 2027, with an initial unveiling possibly earlier, depending on the lawsuit.
