France coach Didier Deschamps says his team is “devastated” after losing 2-0 to Spain in the World Cup semi-final on Tuesday. France’s exit comes with Spain set to reach the final, while France move to the third-place match. Deschamps attributes the defeat to France’s performance, saying they were “a step below” Spain technically and made errors and missed passes that limited their offensive threat. At the same time, he criticises the match officiating, questioning the decision to appoint Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton for a World Cup semi-final. According to the reports, France were particularly unhappy with a penalty awarded to Spain after Lucas Digne kicked Lamine Yamal during an attempted clearance. Deschamps says he does not dwell on the loss but raises whether the referee is at the required standard for a match at that stage, citing that similar situations have occurred in other games. Spain’s captain Rodri also expresses dissatisfaction, arguing that Lamine Yamal should have been given greater protection and that there were multiple uncalled fouls.
