French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to undertake a state visit to Nigeria this fall, according to Marc Fonbaustier, the French ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS. The announcement is made during celebrations of France’s National Day in Abuja on Tuesday night. Fonbaustier describes the visit as an opportunity to review the progress of a “roadmap” for Nigeria–France relations and to outline priorities for cooperation in the coming years. He says the meeting is expected about two years after President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Paris. The ambassador links the planned engagement to areas including economic development, job creation, environmental protection, democracy and the rule of law, and says both countries cooperate on counterterrorism and regional stability. Fonbaustier also points to recent commercial and cultural developments, citing examples such as partnerships involving Carrefour and HyperCity, Accor and Shoreline, and Canal+’s acquisition of MultiChoice. He adds that France, through the French Development Agency (AFD), is working with Nigeria on agricultural projects aimed at improving food security and supporting value chains, including in northern Nigeria and across the ECOWAS region. The exact dates are not yet released.
