Nigeria’s Federal Government sets December 2028 as the final deadline for switching off analogue television broadcasting and completing the transition to digital TV. The date is announced through statements by the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Charles Ebuebu, who speaks to the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja. Ebuebu describes the timeline for an analogue switch-off as part of phased work, with “phase one” focused on preparing conditions before the final cutover.
The NBC head says subsequent phases cover additional implementation steps including paid television services, studio development, and designated production centres for content creators. He also links progress to audience measurement, citing a completed proof of concept in about 7,000 homes in Lagos and implementation underway in Abuja.
Ebuebu adds that the NBC will make the phases public after consultations with key stakeholders, including the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria. He also frames the analogue switch-off as a way to free spectrum for other uses, noting that the spectrum will be professionally valued before allocation to sectors such as telecommunications and financial services, with further steps for handling obsolete broadcasting equipment and required policy measures for digital switch-over.
