Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Madan Mitra resigns from the Mamata Banerjee-led faction and joins a dissident TMC group led by Ritabrata Banerjee. Multiple outlets report that Mitra’s switch deepens an internal party crisis following TMC’s defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Reports say Mitra announced his departure from Mamata Banerjee’s camp and aligned himself with the rebel faction on Wednesday. He is described as a TMC veteran and a member of the Assembly from the Kamarhati constituency in North 24 Parganas. His exit follows closely on recent internal reshuffling: NDTV and other reports state he was appointed a TMC general secretary only days earlier as part of a party organisational change led by Mamata Banerjee.

Several outlets add that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued summons to Mitra and his family in connection with a municipal recruitment scam in West Bengal. India Today and other coverage also reports Mitra’s accusations that senior leadership, including Abhishek Banerjee, refused to step aside during the party’s internal crisis. Separately, coverage notes that Chandrima Bhattacharya had resigned as West Bengal TMC president, contributing to further instability.
