Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Nigeria’s Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says Nigeria needs competent, accountable and compassionate leadership to unlock the country’s human and natural resources for sustainable development. Obi makes the remarks after participating in a high-level roundtable discussion titled “Nigeria in 2027 and Beyond,” organised by the European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin. He characterizes the discussions as focused on Nigeria’s democratic trajectory beyond 2027, development cooperation, international affairs, and ways to strengthen bilateral partnerships for economic growth. In a statement shared on his official X account, Obi argues that Nigeria has the resources to become prosperous, secure and globally competitive, but that outcomes depend on adopting good governance. He lists priorities for leadership, including investing in people, education, healthcare, productive enterprise, the rule of law and strong institutions, rather than what he describes as politics of consumption. Obi also says Nigeria’s future depends on deliberate shifts from consumption to production, poverty to prosperity, and division to unity, supported by fiscal responsibility and productive partnerships with the international community. He thanks the organisers for the engagement and says it supports international cooperation.
