The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved major changes to the format of its next two men’s World Cups. For the 2027 ODI World Cup, the competition will move to a three-stage structure for the 14-team tournament before the knockout rounds. Multiple reports describe the introduction of a new middle phase, commonly referred to as a “Super Series” and/or “Super 7,” following an initial stage. The changes are aimed at making the tournament more competitive and reducing dead or low-impact matches.

For the 2028 T20 World Cup, the ICC is expanding the tournament to 20 teams. Sources report the introduction of a new “Super 10” stage as part of the revamped pathway through the group phases, followed by subsequent progression toward knockout play.

In addition to the main stage format changes, one report says the ICC has also approved a new qualification pathway for the 2028 T20 World Cup, alongside the expanded format. Overall, outlets agree the ICC is restructuring both tournaments to increase competitiveness and introduce new branded stages within the league system.
