Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav reiterates support for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and says the state government plans to introduce a UCC bill in the Assembly during the upcoming monsoon session, starting July 20. Speaking at an Indore event, Yadav argues against having different personal laws for different religious communities and makes the point by analogy, saying that if one person marries once, another should be expected to do the same. Both reports say a committee report on UCC implementation has been submitted to the CM and forwarded to the Law Department. The committee, headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, recommends excluding tribal communities from the UCC’s scope. It is reported to have studied prevailing personal-law arrangements and collected inputs from more than 10 lakh citizens across religions and political groups. Yadav also criticises the Congress party’s position on the UCC, alleging it takes a “double-faced” approach and citing its absence from the committee meeting. Separately, regarding the Bhojshala dispute pending in the Supreme Court, he says the Madhya Pradesh government will abide by the court’s decision and proceed accordingly.
