The National Population Commission (NPC) launches an online birth and death registration platform, VitalReg, under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system. NPC Chairman Dr. Aminu Yusuf announces the rollout during a press briefing in Abuja. The platform is designed to allow Nigerians to register births and deaths without visiting physical registration points in many cases. The NPC says VitalReg becomes fully operational across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory on July 1, 2026.
According to the NPC, the digital system provides 24-hour access to civil registration services and enables digital certificate issuance where applicable. It also focuses on improved data validation and security, with the aim of reducing paperwork and waiting times. The NPC links the reform to gaps in civil registration coverage: it estimates about five million births occur annually, but many are not registered, and death registration coverage is below that of births.
The commission states it has established 4,011 registration centres across 774 local government areas and plans to expand to 8,000 centres. It says partnerships with organisations including ALGON, NIMC, UNICEF, and Barnksforte Technologies support decentralisation. The NPC notes some specialised services may have reviewed fees, while birth registration and notification remain subsidised.
