Researchers report the discovery and formal scientific description of a new species of colobus monkey in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The species, identified from observations in forests of Lomami National Park, is notable for its unusual orange-colored lips and a distinct set of vocalizations described by investigators. According to reporting on the study, the first evidence of an unknown monkey dates to 2008, when conservationists photographed an unidentified primate during an expedition. A later sighting occurred in 2018, prompting scientists to carry out a targeted mission to locate additional individuals and gather information needed for a scientific description. The findings are published in PLOS One. The researchers conclude that the monkey represents a previously undescribed species and provide documentation based on sightings and study of the animals in their natural habitat. The work highlights the role of repeated field observations and conservation expeditions in revealing previously unrecorded biodiversity in Central Africa’s dense rainforest ecosystems.
