Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is traveling to Shanghai, China, for a two-day visit to attend the signing ceremony for Pakistan’s founding membership in the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation (WAICO), the Foreign Office (FO) says. The FO states that Dar will travel on July 16–17 at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. He is expected to sign the agreement on Pakistan’s behalf as a founding member.

During the visit, Dar will also participate in opening activities for the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) and take part in a high-level meeting on global AI governance on July 17, according to the FO. On the sidelines of these events, Pakistan says he will hold a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart and meet other officials to discuss matters of mutual interest.

In statements issued ahead of the trip, Pakistan says Dar will share Islamabad’s perspective on strengthening international AI cooperation, highlighting priorities for the Global South, bridging the global AI divide, promoting equitable access to AI technologies, and supporting capacity-building so AI benefits contribute to sustainable development.

Pakistan has previously indicated support for China’s initiative to create WAICO following China’s announcement after the 2025 WAIC opening in Shanghai and during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s May visit.
