United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia outlines discussions from his visit to Abuja tied to Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC). The U.S. Embassy says Garcia met senior Nigerian government officials to advance the U.S.–Nigeria strategic partnership and address issues connected to the CPC process.

Across the accounts, the meetings focus on security cooperation and related efforts to protect vulnerable communities. Garcia specifically urges stronger protection for Christian communities and measures aimed at the safe return of internally displaced persons (IDPs). The discussions also include justice sector reform, including the prosecution of terrorism-related cases.

The talks further cover digital transformation and commercial diplomacy, as well as regional stability. Garcia meets key figures including the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, and the National Security Adviser.

Both reports say the CPC-related progress is expected to be reviewed during the next U.S.–Nigeria Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting scheduled for Washington, D.C., in August.
