The United Nations reports that the cost of a healthy diet has risen by 25% over the past five years, according to figures released Wednesday by the UN. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) states that, on average, a healthy diet now costs $4.28 per person per day in purchase power parity terms. The report says this price level keeps healthy eating out of reach for about one-third of the world’s population. In total, 2.69 billion people—nearly one in every three—still cannot afford a healthy diet, the UN said. The assessment is drawn from FAO’s 2026 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report. While the coverage highlights the global affordability gap, the figures presented focus on the measured increase in diet costs since 2021 and the resulting number of people unable to meet the cost of a healthy diet.
