North Korean leader Kim Jong-un meets with Wang Huning, China’s top political adviser, in Pyongyang as both sides discuss deepening China–North Korea relations, according to North Korean state media. Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), leads a party and government delegation on a three-day visit to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the two countries.

During the meetings, Wang conveys greetings and “best wishes” from Chinese President Xi Jinping to Kim, while Kim asks Wang to deliver his appreciation to Xi. Another reported meeting involves Jo Yong-won, a senior Workers’ Party of Korea official, and Wang, where both sides discuss ways to strengthen bilateral exchanges and cooperation. Jo says the rapidly changing international political environment calls for the two countries to reinforce “militant unity” and support based on the treaty. The North Korean side characterizes the relationship as having entered a new stage under Kim’s leadership.
