Uganda’s Ministry of Health says the country has discharged its last confirmed Ebola patient from the Mulago national referral hospital’s isolation centre in Kampala, triggering the start of a 42-day countdown toward official Ebola-free status. Under World Health Organization (WHO) guidance, the countdown begins after the most recent patient is discharged and runs until no new Ebola cases are detected for 42 days. Multiple reports state that Uganda is seeking to have Ebola-related travel restrictions lifted in light of the progress. The outbreaks figures reported by outlets differ slightly: Uganda is described as having recorded 20 confirmed Ebola cases overall, including five locally acquired infections and 15 imported cases, while one outlet reports 17 recoveries, two deaths, and one isolation case. Another report also describes 20 cases linked to the Bundibugyo strain, with infections tied to mid-May and cross-border circumstances involving the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo. The country’s eligibility for official declaration depends on continued absence of new infections throughout the countdown period.
