IDP Education, a co-owner of the IELTS testing system, announces that IELTS in India will transition completely to computer-based delivery starting September 2026, ending the paper-based format after the end of August 2026. Multiple outlets report that paper-based IELTS will remain available for a limited period, with three final scheduled test dates: July 25, August 6 and August 22, 2026. After these dates, registrations for the paper format close and future IELTS tests in India are conducted through computer-based options.
The shift is described as a change in test delivery rather than test content or standards. Sources state that the computer-based IELTS keeps the same test format, question pattern, difficulty level and scoring criteria as the paper-based version. From September, candidates in India can choose between two computer-delivered variants. One option, IELTS on Computer, delivers the Listening, Reading and Writing sections on a computer, while the Speaking test continues face-to-face with an IELTS-certified examiner. The second option, IELTS on Computer (Writing on Paper), keeps Listening and Reading on a computer but requires the Writing section to be completed on paper, with Speaking still conducted in person.
