The Supreme Court allows the release of the animated film “Mahaprabhu Jagannath,” but delays it until after the ongoing Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra. The producers of the film, Ele Animations Pvt. Ltd, had challenged an Orissa High Court order that restricted the film’s release, which was scheduled to start during the Yatra period. The Supreme Court bench noted that the Rath Yatra begins on July 16 and continues until July 27. It therefore refuses an immediate nationwide release during the Yatra. Instead, the court permits the film to be exhibited on or after July 28, 2026, and disposes of the appeal.
In the background, reports say the Orissa High Court had imposed a countrywide ban/interim restraint on the film on concerns related to adherence to religious texts, with objections to the film’s portrayal of Lord Jagannath. During Supreme Court proceedings, the producers cite that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cleared the film and that some promotional and screening activity had already occurred via digital platforms. The Supreme Court also issues notices to multiple parties, including the Union government and the Odisha government, as well as the CBFC and temple administration.
