Former Senate President Bukola Saraki petitions the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) against the planned conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) on Kwara State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Sulyman Ibrahim. In separate reporting, Saraki says he has urged the LPPC to scrutinise Ibrahim’s conduct and withhold the SAN elevation pending investigation. The petitions are directed to the LPPC, which is chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), and are linked to allegations that Ibrahim used prosecutorial powers improperly. Saraki alleges that Ibrahim preferred charges against him and two others that, in Saraki’s view, have no basis in law and were designed as a political weapon. Saraki argues the allegations amount to malicious prosecution and abuse of constitutional powers, and he cites alleged violations of due process, including that he was not invited for questioning or confronted with allegations before proceedings began. Saraki also points to a clearance by the federal Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) over the 2018 Offa robbery, while stating that Ibrahim later filed charges anyway. The reports also note that earlier, LPPC shortlisted 89 applicants for SAN conferment.
