The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi State plays down recent defections of some members to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), saying the party’s strength and unity remain intact ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement attributed to the APC State Publicity Secretary, Shehu Dauda Mohammed, the party says individuals have the right to join any political party of their choice. It cautions, however, against overstating the effect of the departures, arguing that the exit of a limited number of people does not amount to evidence that the APC is weakening or that Bauchi State’s political direction is changing.

The APC’s response follows the defection of Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, who is reported to have left the APC for the PRP after stepping down from the party’s governorship primary. The statement also points to other resignations, including Samaila Kaila Dahuwa, Rabilu Bala Kashuri, Shehu Aliyu Musa, and their supporters.

APC says its structures and grassroots activities continue across Bauchi’s 20 local government areas and 323 wards, and it reiterates 2027 goals such as supporting the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and working to reclaim state-level political power and win legislative seats.
