Lando Norris will start the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps with a 10-place grid penalty after McLaren confirms the team has installed new power unit components that exceed Formula 1’s permitted allocation. Multiple outlets report that the penalty means Norris will drop down the starting order and, regardless of qualifying position, cannot start higher than 11th. The BBC and other reports attribute the sanction to Norris exceeding the maximum number of engine parts. The Guardian adds that the decision involves fitting a fourth power electronics unit of the season, one more than allowed under the regulations. The Guardian also notes that Norris’s first two such units experienced “terminal” issues earlier in the season, including problems in China in March and a further problem during free practice in Monaco last month. With the penalty applied for the Belgian GP, Norris is set to begin the race from lower down the grid than his qualifying result would otherwise allow.
