A colleague and physiotherapist, Anita Baaki, has filed a sworn affidavit in the Ebonyi State High Court describing the circumstances leading to the death of Mary Habila. Habila is described as a nurse attached to the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences and on secondment to the Federal Ministry of Works. Baaki says she travelled with Habila and other Ministry officials from Abuja to Ebonyi State on June 24, 2026, for an official assignment connected to the Minister of Works, David Umahi. She states they stayed in separate but adjoining rooms in a staff chalet within the minister’s country home in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area, and she says the chalet was designated for ministry staff and associates rather than being the minister’s personal residence.

Baaki reports that she last saw Habila alive on the evening of June 26 after Habila returned from having her hair done. She says Habila showed her new hairstyle, chatted, and told Baaki she was tired and wanted to shower before sleeping. Baaki says that the next morning she became concerned when Habila did not come out, received no response to phone calls, alerted domestic staff, and had the locked room forced open. She says Habila was found unconscious near the room entrance and was taken to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed her dead on arrival. Police investigations are ongoing, and lawyers representing the minister request a comprehensive forensic autopsy before burial.
