A viral video circulating on X since July 14 claims to show the Iranian Navy destroying a ship in the Strait of Hormuz during renewed hostilities. The fact-checkers say the claim is false. They report the footage is older and instead depicts a U.S. Navy strike against an Iranian Shahid Soleimani-class corvette in the Persian Gulf.

The posts that accompanied the video were shared by multiple pro-Iranian accounts with captions asserting that the ship sank after U.S. clearance to transit the strait and that only the IRGC controls passage. Some posts drew millions of views. Fact-checkers conducted keyword searches and found no matching coverage of the viral clip as a recent Hormuz incident. Reverse image searching key frames led to earlier reporting, including a March 10 article by Naval News describing a U.S. strike on the Iranian corvette IRIS Haj Qasem. Other outlets reportedly re-shared the same visuals in connection with the March 8 strike.

The outlets cited in the fact-checks therefore conclude the video does not show a newly destroyed ship in the Strait of Hormuz, but rather an earlier U.S. naval attack in the Persian Gulf.
