Former India women’s cricket captain Mithali Raj says Smriti Mandhana should lead India in the longer formats when Harmanpreet Kaur steps down, and that Shafali Varma should be considered for T20I captaincy. Raj points to Harmanpreet’s leadership in winning the ODI World Cup last year but says India’s performances in ICC T20 tournaments have not met expectations under her tenure, including an early exit in the most recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Speaking to PTI, Raj argues that it is an appropriate time to develop more leadership within the team. She also calls for clearer definition of players’ roles and improvements in fitness, saying these areas have affected India’s pace bowling and fielding during the T20 World Cup.
Regarding formats, Raj says Mandhana is suited to captain in ODIs and should also be considered for Tests. For T20Is, she prefers a younger captain and cites Varma’s experience and success, including captaining India to the Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup title.
