The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State criticises Governor Douye Diri’s proposed ₦100 billion stadium project and argues that the administration should prioritise programmes for jobs, food security and poverty reduction. In statements reported by multiple outlets, the PDP says it is not opposed to infrastructure development, but contends that public funds should go toward projects that generate employment, support local businesses and improve living standards.
The party challenges the economic justification of the stadium plan, asking for clarity on its sustainability, expected returns and the specific employment opportunities it would create. PDP also points to what it describes as the neglect of the existing Samson Siasia Stadium, arguing that only now is it being considered for upgrades after years of underuse.
In addition, the PDP links its criticism to broader governance concerns, including issues such as public transportation and the absence of a functional water system in Yenagoa. The party says Bayelsa, which relies on federal allocations, cannot justify spending ₦100 billion on a stadium solely to host the National Sports Festival, and calls for an economic recovery programme with measurable targets for employment and poverty reduction.
