Instacart acquires computer vision company Arpalus to strengthen the accuracy of inventory data used across its grocery platforms. The acquisition is intended to apply Arpalus’ “shelf intelligence” technology—built specifically for grocery retail—to improve how retailers and consumers see product availability.

According to Instacart and coverage of the deal, Arpalus’ computer vision tools can be used through smartphone or other camera-equipped devices, enabling collection of shelf-related information that supports more reliable inventory records. Instacart says the improved data will benefit both eCommerce fulfillment and in-store operations, where accurate on-shelf status can influence planning and replenishment.

The reports frame the acquisition as a technology move focused on better underlying inventory accuracy rather than changes to Instacart’s core services. Instacart describes the partnership as a way to bring additional retail intelligence capabilities into its own systems, with the goal of improving the product information that drives grocery ordering and operational workflows.
