A landslide in southwest China’s Chongqing has buried parts of a residential area and traps an as-yet undetermined number of people, according to Chinese state media. Multiple reports say the landslide occurred in Pengshui county, with CCTV describing the collapse striking at about 9:08 a.m. Local footage aired by CCTV shows a mountainside giving way onto riverside homes, with several buildings located close to the collapse site. One report says local authorities were alerted after rocks began falling from a hillside around 8 a.m., prompting an emergency warning. Authorities then evacuated more than 60 residents, but the landslide occurred at 9:08 a.m., trapping several people before the evacuation could be completed. CCTV also reports that at least eight people are rescued from the debris. Rescue and search operations are ongoing, with crews searching through the rubble for additional survivors. International outlets repeating state-media accounts do not provide confirmed figures beyond the initial rescues and do not specify any deaths or the total number of people trapped, citing that it remains unclear.
