Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde rejects a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) inquiry report into the Chembur tree crash that killed 11-year-old Vihaan Srivastav. In both reports, Tawde says the BMC general body had already rejected the findings and she directs the civic administration to conduct a fresh probe. The mayor’s stated concerns include that the report does not assign accountability adequately and that the compensation figure mentioned is unacceptable to the bereaved family.

The BMC inquiry, as described by the outlets, attributes responsibility to a road work contractor and a supervising consultant, while clearing BMC officials from the roads and garden departments. The earlier recommendation includes fines of Rs 5 lakh for the contractor and Rs 2 lakh for the supervising consultant, with no negligence found on the part of the cleared departments.

Tawde also indicates that the new investigation should include corporators on the panel. Vihaan Srivastav’s father and other corporators criticize the process as lacking transparency and sufficient accountability for the child’s death, and the mayor speaks against the reported Rs 7 lakh valuation set in the report for the victim’s family.
