Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum says he is grateful to President Bola Tinubu for retaining Vice President Kashim Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election. Zulum describes the decision as historic for Borno State and Nigeria’s North-East, saying it is the first time an indigene from the region both rises to the vice-presidential position and is given the opportunity to run again on the ticket. Speaking to State House correspondents in Abuja, Zulum says Tinubu formally presented Shettima with the official certificate confirming his selection as the All Progressives Congress (APC) vice-presidential candidate. He adds that he sought and received permission for governors and representatives from the North-East to make a thank-you visit. Zulum also notes that although the vice-presidential role is often seen as belonging to the broader Northern Nigeria, the North-East has accepted Shettima as its representative. He says a North-East delegation plans to visit the President next week to further express appreciation. The reported re-nomination is also presented as having ended months of speculation about the party’s plans for the 2027 election.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for retaining Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election. Zulum described the decision as historic for Borno State and the North-East region, noting that it marks the first time an indigene from the area has held the position of Vice President and been given the opportunity for a second term. The governor spoke to State House correspondents on Thursday after President Tinubu formally presented Shettima with the official certificate confirming his selection as the All Progressives Congress (APC) vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 polls. The presentation took place during a brief ceremony at the President’s office in the State House, Abuja. “I’m here to appreciate President Tinubu for renominating one of our sons, Senator Kashim Shettima, as Vice President,” Zulum said. He added that he sought and received the President’s permission for governors and representatives from the North-East to pay a thank-you visit. The Borno governor emphasised the significance of the gesture: “We have never had it like this… This is the first time our son has become the number two man of Nigeria, so we are so happy for this.” He noted that while the position belongs to the entire Northern Nigeria, the region has accepted Shettima as their representative. Zulum said the North-East delegation plans to visit the President next week to express their appreciation. The retention of the Tinubu-Shettima ticket has ended months of speculation and is seen as a move to ensure continuity and reward loyalty within the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
