The Federal High Court in Abuja strikes out a pre-election suit filed by former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi challenging former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s emergence as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate. In the ruling, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik dismisses the case after Amaechi’s counsel moves for its withdrawal, stating that the parties have settled their differences. The motion follows the parties’ application for discontinuance.
Amaechi had approached the court to nullify the ADC’s presidential primary held on May 25, arguing that the process violated the Electoral Act, the ADC constitution, and the party’s guidelines for the 2027 elections. He sought orders restraining Atiku from presenting himself as the party’s candidate, compelling the ADC to conduct a fresh primary within a set timeline, and preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising Atiku as the candidate.
Premium Times and other outlets report that the withdrawal indicates resolution of the internal dispute within the ADC before the 2027 general elections.
