Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi tells Pakistan to intensify mediation between the United States and Iran amid ongoing regional tensions. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and foreign minister Ishaq Dar discusses Islamabad’s “ongoing efforts” to facilitate engagement between Washington and Tehran, according to readouts from both countries. Chinese state media Xinhua reports that Wang praises Pakistan’s mediation work, including helping extend a temporary ceasefire, and says Beijing supports Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives and will contribute to mediation efforts. Wang also expresses hope that Pakistan will step up its efforts to help reopen or restore normal passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office later clarifies that some local media coverage misrepresented Wang’s remarks, saying the call was held with cordiality and that Wang did not issue a “do more” directive. The Foreign Office says Wang reaffirmed appreciation for Pakistan’s constructive role and backed the continuation of a durable ceasefire and normal passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
The calls come as diplomatic activity continues around the US-Iran crisis, with Pakistan also meeting or speaking with US, Saudi and UN representatives while negotiations face obstacles.
