India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) says the India-operated terminal at Iran’s Chabahar Port is not damaged following reports of US airstrikes near the port. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the government reviewed claims that the attacks hit port infrastructure, including a surveillance tower overlooking commercial shipping activity, but confirmed that “the terminal itself did not suffer any damage.” The clarification followed statements and images circulated online suggesting a tower near the facility had collapsed, with Iranian state media acknowledging that the port area was targeted in another round of US strikes without immediately verifying damage to the tower.
Iranian authorities previously described the monitoring structure as used to oversee commercial vessels entering the port, where the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) can also be present. The reported strikes are part of a wider US campaign against Iranian infrastructure amid heightened US-Iran tensions.
Separately, MEA said India continues discussions with relevant stakeholders on how to proceed with the Chabahar Port project after the expiry of a US sanctions waiver that previously allowed India’s participation. India has said there are no announced changes to its engagement with the port, which it describes as a strategic route providing access to Afghanistan and Central Asia while bypassing Pakistan.
