PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari launches his Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) election campaign in the region, promising that—if elected—he will be the “voice” of AJK people in Islamabad and on international platforms. Speaking at a rally, he says the current situation in AJK is a “test” for the AJK government, Pakistan and all political parties, and argues that politicians are not bridging the gap between federal authorities and people in AJK. He also links the wider problem to other regions, including Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Bilawal calls for resolving the AJK issue “politically and peacefully” and proposes forming a truth and reconciliation commission, saying it could be acceptable to both the government and protesters. He urges protesters to halt demonstrations that disrupt supplies of food, fuel and medicine, and asks the government to refrain from further measures until the commission is established and completes its work. He adds that neither side has responded to his proposal. Bilawal also says the government is punishing Kashmiris broadly rather than targeting specific offenders. He frames the forthcoming July 27 AJK polls as the “most important” in the region’s history.
