Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deputy national chairman Bode George says persistent flooding in Lagos is driven by indiscriminate sand-filling and land reclamation along the Lagos Lagoon. In interviews reported by outlets, he argues that areas such as Ikoyi and Lekki were originally surrounded by water, but extensive reclamation has changed the lagoon’s natural contours. George warns that the lagoon has been sand-filled to a level that affects its ability to absorb stormwater. He cites observations around landmarks such as the IBB Bridge, saying the lagoon’s water level can become higher than the adjacent road. According to George, this effectively reverses expected drainage patterns—rather than rainfall flowing into the lagoon, the narrowing of water access and reduction of lagoon capacity increase the likelihood of water accumulating on roads. He also contends that in the absence of mechanical pumping systems, floodwater remains trapped and spreads across parts of the city during heavy rains, including areas near the Obalende Canal.
Bode George links Lagos flooding to sand-filling of the Lagos Lagoon

- Bode George says sand-filling and land reclamation along the Lagos Lagoon worsen flooding in Lagos.
- He attributes the problem to indiscriminate or “greedy” sand-filling that reduces the lagoon’s stormwater absorption capacity.
- He argues reclamation changes natural drainage patterns so rainwater cannot flow into the lagoon as before.
- George says the lagoon level can rise higher than nearby roads, citing areas around the IBB Bridge.
- He adds that without mechanical pumping, floodwater accumulates on roads during the rainy season.
Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, has attributed persistent flooding in Lagos to what he described as indiscriminate and “greedy” sand-filling of the Lagos Lagoon.Speaking in an interview with real estate expert Femi Rogers, George explained that areas such as Ikoyi and Lekki were originally surrounded by water before extensive land reclamation altered the natural landscape. He warned that the environmental consequences of these projects are now evident.“My fear now is that the lagoon has been sand-filled to a senseless level. If you get to the IBB Bridge, you’ll notice that the level of the lagoon is now higher than the road,” he said.George noted that the excessive reclamation has reduced the lagoon’s capacity to absorb stormwater, reversing natural drainage patterns and worsening flooding across the state.“When it rains, the water is supposed to flow into the lagoon, but they have narrowed it through greedy sand-filling, with everybody thinking they are building waterfront properties without considering the environmental impact,” he stated. He added that without mechanical pumping systems, floodwater will continue to accumulate on roads since the lagoon now sits higher than surrounding infrastructure. “That’s why the whole place gets flooded. The roads are flooded. Go through the Obalende Canal during the rainy season, and you’ll see water everywhere,” George said.
