The FBI has arrested a 21-year-old Florida student accused of using fake games published on Steam to infect victims and drain cryptocurrency wallets. Prosecutors say Zyaire Wilkins published multiple seemingly legitimate video games on Steam that contained malware. The authorities allege the games infected about 8,000 victims and led to unauthorized access to cryptocurrency wallet credentials for roughly 80 wallets. According to the complaints, the scheme resulted in at least $220,000 worth of cryptocurrency being stolen.
Authorities describe the games as appearing normal to users, while secretly carrying malware designed to compromise accounts and extract credentials. Prosecutors also allege Wilkins and unnamed co-conspirators marketed the games through platforms including Discord, LinkedIn, and Telegram. The case materials cited by outlets indicate investigators traced cryptocurrency activity to additional purchases and gift cards, linking them to addresses and delivery records tied to Wilkins. The FBI then obtained a search warrant, seized devices and digital wallets from his residence, and reports say Wilkins did not answer questions.
The allegations are presented by prosecutors; the reports do not indicate a conviction.
