A landslide in southwestern China’s Chongqing municipality kills at least eight people and leaves 34 others missing, according to multiple reports. The incident occurs after heavy rain and is linked to a section of the Wujiang River that runs through karst mountainous terrain with small towns and terraced areas. The landslide begins around 9:08 a.m. on the outer edge of Chongqing, when large amounts of rocks and soil wash downhill. Reports say the flow buries more than 10 residential buildings. Emergency response efforts are underway at the site, with more than 800 rescuers involved, according to one outlet citing local information. Authorities also take measures to reduce risk and prevent further disruptions. Water, electricity, and gas supplies are cut off within a 1-kilometer radius of the landslide area, according to one report. Officials continue searching for missing people as they assess damage and monitor conditions in the affected mountainous region.
